Algoma will play Cuba City at 6:35pm Thursday at the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament at the Resch Center in Green Bay. We’ll preview the Wolves tomorrow and take a look at their opponent today.
The Cubans (25-1) are riding a 17 game winning streak into the State Tournament. Their only loss of the season was a 45-42 setback to Brodhead. All but two of their games have been decided by 10 points or more. Cuba City features a balanced attack with no player averaging double figures. Coach Jeff Pustina said the strength of his team is his young guards. Freshman Jessi Marti and sophmores Chloe Pustina and Mollie Wedige are the top three scorers. The Cubans have won 9 titles in 13 previous appearances. This will be the third meeting at the State Tournament. The Wolves beat Cuba City 57-42 in the 1985 Class B semi-finals while the Cubans scored a 39-35 win over Algoma in the 1980 semi-finals.
