Vikings, Clippers Have Seasons End

The Gibraltar/Washington Island and Sturgeon Bay baseball teams had their seasons come to an end in the WIAA sectional finals on Tuesday.

Division 4
The Vikings suffered a 5-3 loss to two time defending state champion Athens in Crivitz. Gibraltar took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Dominic Krauel hit an RBI triple and Alex Laughlin followed with an RBI double. The Bluejays (18-4) tied the game with a couple of unearned runs in the third and took the lead on a suicide squeeze in the 5th inning. The Vikings (12-13) tied the game in the 6th on a Laughlin RBI single that scored Sam Lindenburg but could not take the lead despite having the bases loaded with nobody out. Athens took the lead for good in the top of the 7th when the ball hit the runner in the helmet as the Vikings tried to turn a double play on a failed squeeze bunt. Laughlin finished with 4 hits for the Vikings. In the semi-finals, the Vikings beat Niagara, 9-2, as Luke Steebs pitched a complete game. Trevor Reinhardt had 2 RBI while Laughlin, Andras Szakala, Griffin Reinhardt, Steebs, Spencer Krause and Krauel added RBI’s.

Division 3
The Clippers had a dramatic 1-0 win over Winnebago Lutheran Academy in the semi-finals at Random Lake. Jake Schneider threw a complete game 4 hitter and scored the only run in the 5th on a Reece Nellis RBI single. Ozaukee beat Sturgeon Bay 13-2 (5 innings) as they fell behind 4-0 in the first inning. Max Bordeau, Ryan Jacobson and Trent Ehlers singled for the Clippers (21-8).
