Sam Forkert Fires No-Hitter for Marian University

Marian University sophomore left-hander Sam Forkert was named Northern Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing his first career, and the school’s sixth-ever, no-hitter on Sunday.

Forkert struck out 12 batters, while holding Finlandia University hitless through all seven innings in a 1-0 win Sunday, March 25.  It was the sixth no-hitter in Marian baseball history and first since 1998.

In the 7th inning, Finlandia drew a leadoff walk and advanced the runner to third base with two outs. But Forkert struck out the final batter to secure the win and a place in the Marian record books. In the process, he lowered his ERA to under a run at 0.96 through three starts this year and boosted his strikeout total to a league-leading 24 punch outs.

Forkert, who is majoring in Elementary Education, was the Packerland Conference Co-Player of the Year at Gibraltar High School in 2010.
