Northern Door and Gibraltar Split a Doubleheader

Northern Door and Gibraltar split an American Legion baseball doubleheader at Sevastopol Town Park in Institute on Tuesday.  The Chiefs won the opener, 3-2, with Gibraltar winning the night cap 3-1 for their first win as a Legion program.

Game 1
Winning pitcher Quin Schram struck out 11, including the final out of the game when Gibraltar had the potential tying and go ahead runs on base.  Joe Burlo and Lucas Stenzil had RBI singles in the first inning as the Chiefs took an early 2-0 lead.  Gibraltar closed to within 2-1 on an Ernie Erickson RBI single in the fourth inning but Northern Door regained their two run lead when Zach Christianson hit an RBI double.  Casey Weddig hit an RBI single in the seventh inning for Gibraltar and Brandon Emery Janzen took the loss despite giving up only three base hits.

Game 2
Winning pitcher Ernie Erickson went the distance on a three hitter and Andrew Iding had two hits for Gibraltar.  Iding drove in a run in the first inning for Gibraltar but Northern Door tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Quin Schram singled to score Ethan Kroll.  But Gibraltar took the lead for good in the fourth inning when Alex Johnson drew a bases loaded walk for a 2-1 lead and Gibraltar went ahead 3-1 in the fifth when Iding doubled and scored on Erickson’s RBI single.  Kroll finished with two hits for the Chiefs.
