Institute picked up their first win of the season as they beat Baileys Harbor in Door County League baseball Sunday. West Jacksonport and Sister Bay remained on top of the standings with wins and Washington Island moved two games above .500. Here are the details:
Institute batted around in the bottom of the first scoring six runs in a 7-3 win over Baileys Harbor. In his return from an injury, John Heimbecher went 3-for-4 and Simon Rabas and Kyle Volkmann each added two hits in the win. Josh Paul (1-3) went the first six for the win and Volkmann pitched the final three innings for the save. Derek Niedzwiecki, Phil Clark and Alex Janisee all had two hits for Baileys Harbor. Amadee Savard (1-1) took the loss.
West Jacksonport scored twice in the sixth for a three run lead and they held off Egg Harbor, 3-2. Eric Bley’s two-run single in the sixth inning turned out to be the deciding factor. Riley Cordier (5-0) scattered three hits and went the distance for the win. Egg Harbor made it interesting late as they scored a single run in both the eighth and ninth innings but their rally came up short. Dave Jilot (2-3) pitched into the sixth and took the loss.
Washington Island scored three runs in the sixth on their way to a 9-3 win over Maplewood. Ben Johnson had four hits in the win and Luke Geiger and Caleb Cornell each added two. Cornell had a two-run double. Matt Foss (6-1) pitched the first six for the win. Chad Laluzerne had two hits, including a triple. Kyle Ploor (2-5) took the loss.
Sister Bay beat Kolberg, 8-2. Matt Hecht was a perfect 4-for-4 and Bubba Laughlin and Tucker Emerson each added two hits for Sister Bay, who led 5-0 after six and tacked on three in the seventh. Sam Forkert (6-1) allowed five hits as he pitched into the seventh for the win. Rob Ray had two hits in the loss, which went to Ernie Erickson (1-2).
