Sturgeon Bay will play at Southern Door in a girls Packerland Conference basketball game on Friday Night. The Eagles beat the Clippers 65-9 in December and our coverage begins with the Jorns Chevrolet of Kewaunee pregame show on 93.9FM / wdor.com
At halftime of the game, the Southern Door Athletic Booster Club will induct Mimi Schmidt-Freeman (Class of 1980) and Jared Spude (Class of 2008) into the Southern Door Athletic Hall of Fame.
Schmidt-Freeman participated in volleyball, basketball, track, and baseball. Mimi excelled in basketball earning 1st Team All-Conference honors three years in a row. Although, Southern Door did not offer softball at the time, Mimi’s involvement in the Sturgeon Bay Girls Little League program as a Little League participant at the World Series in Williamsport PA gave her opportunities to play softball at the college level. She graduated from UW LaCrosse with a degree in child care and development. Mimi lives in Broken Arrow, OK and has two children, Alexis 16, and Brad 12. She has enjoyed coaching softball, and karate, and currently is a 2nd degree black belt.
Spude was a member of the football, basketball, and track & field teams at Southern Door earning 12 varsity letters, and was awarded All-Conference honors in all 3 sports. Jared was a state qualifier his senior year in the shot put and discus where he finished 4th and 10th. Jared joined the United States Army after graduation, where he served as a joint forward observer for the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, KY. He served a 12 month combat deployment to Nangarhar Province Afghanistan. Jared returned to Wisconsin where he studied Political Science and Public Administration. He graduated with highest honors, and was recognized as the student of the year. Jared is an instructor at the Wisconsin Military Academy. He currently resides in Sturgeon Bay with his wife Amanda and works for Breakthrough Fuel in Green Bay
The Hall of Fame was established by the Southern Door Athletic Booster Club, to establish pride, preserve tradition, and honor former athletes and coaches who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics through their performance and representation of Southern Door High School. Plaques honoring all inductees will be on display in lobby outside the Eagle Gym.
