Josh Keeney and John Berrens, JR won the 26th Annual Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament presented by Ranger Boats and Mercury Marine. The Green Bay area team had the lead after Friday with 29.09 pounds, were forced to wait out Saturday with the rest of the field because of high winds, then put together another very solid day on Sunday by weighing in 26.19 pounds to win their first SBOBT championship in only their third try with 55.28 pounds. Keeney said that he and his partner battled through tough conditions to get to their preferred hot spot on Sunday….
Finishing in second place were two time winners and defending champions Cory and Chris Johnston of Ontario, Canada with a two day total of 53.90 pounds while Sturgeon Bay’s John Kolodziej and Jonathan Meacham finished in third place with 52.59 pounds. After finishing in 8th place in 2013 and in 14th place last year, Kolodziej says that they are starting to get this tournament figured out….
Unlike the winners who caught large numbers of fish, Meachem said that they caught less than 20 fish the entire tournament and was left to ponder what could have been had they caught a couple of big fish….
The biggest bass for the tournament, 6.63 pounds, was caught on Friday and a total of 4,195.87 pounds of fish were weighed by the official Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament scales at Wave Pointe Marina and Resort in Little Sturgeon. Complete results can be found at www.sbobt.org
