Sister Bay and West Jacksonport took the lead in the Door County Baseball League on Sunday afternoon. The Bays blasted Washington Island, on the Island 23-6, while the Ports took advantage of a big 6th inning to overcome a tough Institute team 16-11. The Bays and Ports are 2-0 and will meet at West Jacksonport next Sunday.
The other games saw Egg Harbor pull away from Kolberg 12-5 and Maplewood topped Baileys Harbor 8-5.
In Sister Bay’s win they hit 9 home runs, 2 each for James Larsen, Stuart Larsen and Sam Forkert while Justin Hartel hit a grand slam and Al Higgenbotham and Tucker Emerson each found the land beyond the fence once. James Larsen had 5 RBI while Forkert and Hartel added 4 apiece. Matt Foss and Troy Jorgenson homered for the Islanders. Will Henrickson got the win and Mike Anderson took the loss.
At West Jacksonport the home team scored 6 runs in the 6th inning giving the Ports the lead for good, overcoming an Institute lead. Cole Biwer led the way with 3 hits and 2 each for Woody Schartner, Ryan Tanck, Steve Jilot and Alex Larsen. Institute got 4 hits from Matt Petersilka and 2 each for Kyle Volkmann, Kirk Schleicher, Aaron Ash and Danny Allen. Woody Schartner got the win with relief from Alex Larsen while Kyle Volkmann took the loss.
At Kolberg the Egg Harbor Indians took the lead in the 3d inning and the Braves never caught up. The winning pitcher was Riley Spetz with relief for the last 3 innings from Brian Crook for a save. Dave Neinas went 4 innings but took the loss. Brian Crook had 3 hits with 3 each for Riley Spetz and Matt Ash for the winners. Jeff Sperber contributed a home run among 4 hits for Kolberg.
In the game at Baileys Harbor it was a battle all the way, until John Price hit a 3 run home run in the top of the 9th giving Maplewood an 8-3 win. Kyle Ploor got the win with Jason Shimon throwing the final 3 for a save, Joe Christianson was tagged for the loss, going the first 7 innings.
After 2 weeks, Sister Bay and West Jacksonport are 2-0: Egg Harbor, Institute, Washington Island and Maplewood are all 1-1 while Baileys Harbor and Kolberg are 0-2.
Next Sunday: Sister Bay at West Jacksonport: Baileys Harbor at Egg Harbor: Washington Island at Institute and Maplewood at Kolberg.
