The Door County League’s tradition of opening its season on Mother’s Day continued with four games yesterday. Defending champion Sister Bay picked up a win on WDOR while Egg Harbor, West Jacksonport and Kolberg also earned victories. Here are the details:
On 910 AM WDOR and wdor.com, Sister Bay beat Institute, 13-0. Reigning DCL Pitcher of the Year, Ryan Demmin tossed a three-hit shutout. Demmin had 19 strikeouts. Sister Bay pounded out 15 hits, drew eleven walks and scored in every inning but the eighth. James Larsen had three hits, including a double. Stuart Larsen added three hits (2 RBI) and Tom Sawyer (3 runs) and Al Higgenbotham (2 RBI) had two hits. Kyle Volkmann went the first four and took the loss. Volkmann had two of the Cubs three hits.
Kolberg blanked Baileys Harbor, 8-0. Riley Cordier picked up the win. Cordier, David Van Dreese and Austin Rohe combined on a two-hit shutout. Van Dreese had three hits and Bob Tenor added a double, as the Braves scored five times in the second to take the lead for good. Phil Konjurske took the loss for Baileys Harbor.
Egg Harbor beat Maplewood, 5-1. Egg Harbor scored twice in the fourth and fifth and added their final run in the seventh, building a 5-0 lead. David Jilot went the first five for the win. He was relieved by Riley Spetz. Corey Fuller and Cody Giesseman each had two hits and Matt Ash had a two-run double. Kyle Ploor took the loss.
West Jacksonport beat Washington Island, 11-10. Alec Schartner’s squeeze bunt pushed home the winning run in the bottom of the twelfth. Schartner, Cody Leist, Eric Bley, and Willie Franke all had three hits in the win. Sawyer Johnson and Drew Tanck added two. Woody Schartner picked up the win in relief. Criag Gunnlaugsson had five hits to lead Washington Island. Christian Foss took the loss in relief.
