Week one of the Door County Baseball League was an exciting one. Defending champions Egg Harbor fell to West Jacksonport 14-10. The Ports scored 11 runs in the last 3 innings. Dave Jilot got the win in relief of Woody Schartner, Eric DeJardine takes the loss for the Indians, he was Egg Harbor’s 4th pitcher in the game. West Jacksonport was led by Mike Stoneman who had 3 hits & scored 3 times, Ryan Tanck had 2 doubles, Dave Jilot & Nick Johnson each had a pair of hits & Steve Jilot drove in 4. Brian Cook led the way for Egg Harbor with 3 hits. It was a close game throughout, West Jacksonport took the lead in the 7th inning & never looked back.
Sister Bay scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning & won on a 3 run walkoff homerun by John Woerfel to edge out Kolberg 11-9. Will Henrickson got the win for the Bays in relief of Sam Forkert, Dave Neinas went the complete game for the Braves & takes the loss. Stuart Larsen, Tom Sawyer & Justin Hartel had two hits a piece for Sister Bay, Larsen & Sawyer each had homeruns. Chris Wery had 2 hits including a homerun for the Braves. Kolberg took the early lead with 1 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, & 1 in the 4th to make it a 5-0 game. Tom Sawyer got the Bays going with a solo home run to make it 5-1. Kolberg tacked a couple more runs on by the 7th, but the Bays got 3 of their own in the frame making it 7-4 Kolberg. Kolberg added 2 more in the 9th but the Bays erupted for 6 in the bottom of the 9th for the win.
Washington Island topped Maplewood 8-5. Mike Anderson was the winning pitcher for the Islanders, Troy Jorgenson got the save. Kyle Ploor took the loss for the Mets. Troy Jorgenson, Matt Grandy, Craig Gunnlaugsson & Jack Rose all had 2 hits for Washington Island. Jason Pichette had a pair of hits for Maplewood. The game was scoreless until the 5th inning when Josh Coryegi put the Island on the board with a solo homerun. Maplewood put 4 on the board in their half of the 5th to take the lead, but the Island got 1 in the 6th, then took the lead for good in the 7th & pulled away.
Institute beat Baileys Harbor 11-8. Kyle Volkman got the win for the Cubs, striking out 17. Brett Anschutz took the loss. Institute had only 5 hits on the day but Baileys Harbor committed a number of errors. Matt Petersilka was the only Cub with 2 hits, Kirk Schleicher had a triple for Institute. Baileys Harbor was led by Brett Anschutz with 2 hits & Bubba Laughlin got his first county league hit. It was a 6-5 game after 2, but Institute added a run in the 3rd, took the lead in the 4th & pulled away. Baileys Harbor rallied for 2 in the 9th but it wasn’t enough.
