Week two of the Door County League Baseball season saw extra innings, an upset, & an historic pitching performance. Here’s the results:
Kolberg beat West Jacksonport in 10 innings 12 to 11. West Jacksonport took an early 6-1 lead but the Braves battled back to take the lead in the 5th inning at 8-7. With the game tied at 11 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Eric Lardnois walked, then stole second but was caught in a rundown on a Jeff Sperber fielder’s choice. Sperber wound up on second base, then stole third & scored the winning run on an error. Bob Tenor was the winning pitcher, he pitched the final 3 & 1/3 innings. Woody Schartner had two 3 run homeruns & Ryan Tanck & Nick Johnson added 3 hits a piece for the Ports. Kolberg was led by Eric Lardnois, Bob Tenor, Derek Ray & Kurt Ray with 2 hits each. Travis Leroy also homered for the Braves.
Institute knocked off defending league champion Egg Harbor 6 to 3. Kyle Volkman pitched the Cubs to victory with 12 strikeouts. Institute had only 4 hits in the game but took advantage of walks & errors by Egg Harbor. Kirk Schleicher had a two run double for Institute.
Sister Bay shut out Maplewood 7 to 0. Sam Forkert pitched a 1 hitter & struck out 23 Maplewood batters. Stuart Larsen hit a grand slam in the 8th inning for Sister Bay. Maplewood’s only hit was an infield single by Jason Pichette in the 5th inning. Forkert’s 23 strikeouts is believed to be an all time DCL record.
Washington Island held off Baileys Harbor 7 to 5. Troy Jorgenson improves to (2-0) with the win, Mark Woerfel earned the save. Matt Foss & Craig Gunnlaugsson had two hits each for the Islanders. Griffin Cole, Brett Anschutz & Sawyer Johnson all had 2 hits for Baileys Harbor. The game was tied at 4 heading into 9th inning but the Islanders scored 3 in the top half of the inning to earn the win, Baileys Harbor pushed one across in the bottom of the 9th.
