The Door County League held its traditional Mother’s Day opener Sunday. Defending champion, Sister Bay won its game on AM 910 WDOR and wdor.com. Institute, Washington Island and Kolberg also picked up victories. Here are the details:
Sister Bay scored five times in the fifth on their way to a 13-1 win over Maplewood. Winning pitcher Ryan Demmin went the distance. He allowed a run on two hits and had 11 strike outs. James Larsen had three hits for Sister Bay while Demmin, Tom Sawyer and Sam Forkert all added two. Forkert hit a three-run homer in the fifth, the only opening day homer in the entire DCL. Forkert, Demmin and Alex Higgenbotham all added doubles. Chad Laluzerne went the first five and took the loss.
Kyle Volkmann won his managerial debut as Institute beat Egg Harbor, 15-6. Volkmann went the first seven for the win. Cody Giesseman had a double and a single and reached base five times. Volkmann and John Heimbecher each added two hits for the Cubs, who drew 14 walks. Corey Fuller, Jason Fuller, Joe Sawyer and Dave Jilot all had two hits for Egg Harbor. Jilot pitched into the fifth and took the loss.
Washington Island won at Baileys Harbor, 13-4. The Islanders scored their 13 runs on 12 hits, 12 walks and four hit batters. Hannes Johnson had three hits in the win. Caleb Cornell and Christian Foss each added a pair of hits. Troy Jorgenson went the first five for the win. Derek Niedzwiecki and Sawyer Johnson each had two hits in the loss, which went to Chase Mickey.
Kolberg scored two runs in the seventh to slip by West Jacksonport, 3-2. Winning pitcher Bob Tenor pitched into the eighth. Austin Rohe came on in relief and picked up the save. Woody Schartner had two of West Jacksonport’s six hits. Drew Tanck took the loss.
