Clippers Win OT Thriller

The Sturgeon Bay boys basketball team opened the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament with a 49-38 overtime win over Valders on Wednesday Night.  The Clippers (14-8) rallied from a 13 point 3rd quarter deficit thanks to a dominant defensive effort.  Sturgeon Bay held Valders without a field goal in the final 15:26 and outscored the Vikings 28-4 to close the game.  Sturgeon Bay took the lead with a 1:12 to play when Riley Schartner hit a three pointer from the left corner but Valders tied the game with :48.8 to play when Ryan Jirschele hit two free throws.  Both teams missed potential game winners in the final 7.5 seconds as regulation ended with 38-38 tie.  The Clippers opened overtime with a Jesse Mejia 18 foot jumper and never looked back.  Joey Sheehy and Nathan Abrahamson scored 11 points each and Riley Cordier added 10 for Sturgeon Bay while Zack Goedeke and Forrest Fenlon had 12 each for Valders (11-12).  The Clippers will play at defending State Champion Brillion on Friday Night and we’ll have the live broadcast on WDOR.

Luxemburg-Casco opened the regional tournament with a 69-35 win over Southern Door on Wednesday Night.   The Spartans (11-12) pulled away from the Eagles (12-11) with a 15-0 run that turned a 20-16 second quarter lead into a 35-16 third quarter advantage.  L-C exploded for 44 second half points and  all five starters scored in double figures.  Caleb Willems led the Spartans with 16 while Jake Zeitler added 12, David Vlotho 11 and Levi Dax and Carson Falk 10 each.  Southern Door was led by Mitchel Neubauer’s 17 points.  The Spartans will play at Roncalli on Friday Night.
