Clippers Upset Defending State Champions

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers football team upset the defending state champions Wrightstown Tigers 21 – 7  on the opening night of the WIAA Division 4 tournament.

The Clippers got on the board early in the 1st quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Junior Blucher. They would add to that lead late in the first half with a 62 yard scoring drive, again Junior Blucher running from 13 yards out, making it 14 – 0.

A mistake on special teams got Wrightstown back in the game. A punt hit the Sturgeon Bay return man, bouncing into the hands of Wrightstown on Sturgeon Bay’s 9 yard line. They scored on 3rd and goal, putting the Tigers on the board 14 – 7.

With 5:48 left in the game, Sturgeon Bay put it away with a 33 yard scoring pass from Nathan Abrahamson to Lucas Stephenson, making 21 – 7 the final.

Next weekend, Sturgeon Bay (6-3) will play Little Chute (8-1) in the next round as they beat Omro 35 – 0.
