Clippers and Spartans Play at State Tournament Today

Sturgeon Bay and Luxemburg-Casco will play at the WIAA State Soccer tournament at Uihlein Park in Milwaukee today.  The Clippers play The Prairie School at 2:00 while the Spartans take on Mount Horeb at 7:00.

Clippers
Strugeon Bay is making their fourth trip to State in the last 5 years but are still looking for their first State win.  The Clippers (22-3-1) have not scored a goal at State in three previous trips and coach Todd Maas says that his team has had trouble adjusting to the turf field and they have played quality teams in Milwaukee….

One of the big concerns for Sturgeon Bay this week has been the availability of top scorer Jaden Stevenson, the Clippers school record holding goal scorer with 55 this season.  Coach Maas says that Stevenson will not play today and that Cedric Antonio starts in his place.  The Clippers have had a first hand look at The Prairie School this season.  The #1 ranked Hawks (18-4-3)scored a 3-0 win over Sturgeon Bay in September….

Sturgeon Bay practiced at Saint Norbert College in De Pere on their way to Milwaukee on Wednesday.  The other Division 4 semi-final has Barron (17-4-1) playing Saint Thomas More (14-3-4).  The Division 4 State Championship will be played at 10AM on Saturday.

Spartans
Luxemburg-Casco is making their first ever trip to the WIAA State Tournament.  The Spartans (19-4-2) beat Notre Dame 1-0 to punch their ticket to State.  Austin Nellis, who led L-C with 50 goals this season, scored the only goal of the match.  Coach Blair Bandow says that Nellis has been a pleasant surprise this season….

While this is the first trip for L-C, Mount Horeb returns to State for the fourth time in the last five years and the Vikings (13-5-4) won the title in 2011.  Coach Bandow says that the plan is to enjoy the trip to State and will try to stick to the game plan….

The first Division 3 semi-final has Rice Lake (16-8-2) playing Delavan-Darien (21-2-2) at 5:00 today with the championship match at is at Noon on Saturday.
