Wednesday Evening Housefire in Baileys Harbor

There was a fire call near Baileys Harbor Wednesday evening. A homeowner on Moonlight Bay was woken from his sleep by a cracking and popping sound. He looked out a window to notice his roof was on fire and called 9-1-1 at about 10:30 PM. He then began to battle the blaze with a fire extinguisher and then a garden hose. Baileys Harbor Fire Chief Brian Zak reports that when his department arrived they immediately noticed flames shooting above the roofline, and mutual aid was called from the fire departments of Ephraim, Gibraltar, Sister Bay, Jacksonport, Egg Harbor, and Sturgeon Bay as well as the BUG Department. The house was on a small private road off of County Road “Q” and access was rather difficult, so most of the response vehicles remained stationed nearby on County “Q” while tending to the situation. They used just under 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, which was mostly limited to the outside of the structure with some interior damage from the water and smoke. Fire Chief Zak reports that an area 20 x 25 feet was burned through the roof, and all departments had cleared the scene by 2:00 AM. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this point, and there were no injuries.
