Washington Island School Designated Green Ribbon School

The Washington Island School earned some national recognition Friday for its commitment to sustainability and environmental education. The US Department of Education just announced that 5 Wisconsin schools were among those named as 2022 Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools. This honor recognizes schools that reduce environmental impact and costs and improve the health and wellness of the students & staff while providing effective sustainability education. The other schools named included Cambridge Elementary and 3 more schools in Milwaukee. At the Washington Island School solar panels support reduced dependence on traditional energy sources. The students are actively engaged in practices supporting sustainability and they have many opportunities to advance environmental literacy. Twenty-seven schools across the country were honored this year as Green Ribbon Schools, and since the program began in 2012, 39 different schools in Wisconsin have received this honor.
