Reports out of the Philippines indicate that a U.S. Navy Avenger-class mine countermeasure vessel built in Sturgeon Bay 25 years ago ran aground this week in the Sulu Sea, about 400 miles south of Manila.
The USS Guardian (MCM-5), built at Peterson Builders, Incorporated was launched in June of 1987 and commissioned 2 years later. The vessel is assigned to the 7th fleet and is home ported in southern Japan.
Initial reports indicate that there didn’t appear to be any oil leaking due to the grounding.
