United Way Addresses Food Box Letter Removal

The United Way of Door County has been pairing up with the USDA and the Door County Food Pantry Coalition for different “farmers to families” food box events around Door County lately. Last week, they learned that these boxes which they receive from the USDA each contained a printed letter from President Donald Trump. These letters were then removed before the boxes were distributed. Executive Director Amy Kohnle explains further…

Kohnle says upon arrival some boxes were damaged and broken open and that is when the letters were discovered. When these letters were removed, they were then replaced by a different letter from the League of Women Voters. There have been varying responses from the community about the removal of these letters, and the replacement letters put into each box. Kohnle goes on to explain their new approach for all future food boxes during this distribution program…

We then heard from United Way of Door County Board President Peter Kerwin as he apologized for the incident, but again emphasizes the importance of their organization not taking a political stance…

The next “farmers to families” food box event will be Wednesday at the old Shopko building parking lot in Sister Bay from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, or while supplies last. These food boxes are free to anyone on a first-come first-served basis, and cars may begin lining up at 3:45 pm.
