Southern Door Considers Bleacher Replacement

After taking input from residents, the Southern Door school district is moving ahead with planning for replacement of bleachers & a press box at the school between Sturgeon Bay & Brussels. A public information meeting was held Monday evening & a small sub-committee will look at options laid out by consultant JW Industries of Green Bay. While the bleachers were renovated some years ago, changing from wood to aluminum bleachers, the supporting structure can no longer handle the stresses related to a packed house for football games, for example. One option is to replace the 550 home seats. Another calls for bringing all of the seats to one side of the field. Beyond that, the press box needs an upgrade & there are handicap accessibility issues. The estimates for fixing the bleacher problem range from $115,000 to $200,000. In addition, a decision has to be made on how to handle seating for the fall season. One option is to put up temporary bleachers with the hope of having the project completed in time for the track season next year. How to pay for the project will also have to be determined with fundraising a key component.
