More action related to dealing with a $742,000 budget shortfall was taken Monday evening during the regular meeting of the Southern Door Board of Education. Board-members added to a previous decision to eliminate some full-time equivalent positions by making additional cuts & increasing fees. School board actions included the elimination of the athletic director & dean of students positions, the dropping of all freshman sports, cutting out late buses, & fee increases. For example, students wanting to participate in sports will now pay a $75 fee, paying for field trips will be the responsibility of parents & students, & it will cost more to use the Southern Door facilities. Superintendent Patti Vickman said the cost-cutting ideas had shrunk the deficit down to just over $109,000, but more work is needed. That is expected to come during upcoming Southern Door School Board meetings.
