SD School Board Begins Budget Cutting Process

As anticipated, the Southern Door Board of Education began the process of dealing with a $700,000 shortfall in its budget for next school year by making some personnel cuts. The board met in special session Monday evening & agreed to partial layoffs affecting four teachers & eight support staff. In another case, board-members approved a reduction in duties for one employee. The layoffs cover just under two full-time equivalent teachers & just over two full-time equivalent support staff positions. It was noted that there were no non-renewals proposed. The Southern Door school board is expected to revisit the process intended to meet the budget shortfall for the 2013/2014 school year in the weeks ahead. Voters in the district rejected a request for a revenue cap override in each of the next three school years during the spring election on April second. Referendum questions were approved by voters in the Sturgeon Bay, Sevastopol & Washington Island school districts. The Southern Door school board meets in regular session on Monday.
