One issue for residents of Washington Island in recent years has been the need for an upgrade for island EMS facilities. The current location housing these services is the firehouse complex at the intersection of Townline Road and Airport Road. The Door County Board of Supervisors voted July 28th to make an offer to purchase the Historic Island Dairy, at the corner of Townline Road and Rangeline Road, which after specialized remodeling could serve as the island’s new EMS facility. The Historic Island Dairy currently houses the Island Lavender Company and features their lavender retail market, a history exhibit about the building, and a rental wedding ballroom. The county has passed the resolution for an offer to purchase at a cost not to exceed $800,000 with a zoning variance contingency on a new conditional use permit allowing a new service to be housed in the structure after renovation. This ongoing effort to secure a new EMS facility for the island has been worked upon by town and county officials since 2013.
