The 27th annual observance of the Polar Bear Plunge in Jacksonport will be carried out on New Year’s Day. The event, which annually attracts 600 – 800 hardy souls willing to brave the frigid waters of Lake Michigan, is held at lakeside park, starting precisely at noon.
The Jacksonport Polar Bear Club, which started with 1 swimmer in 1986, also attracts as many as 2,000 spectators to the plunge. Music on the beach will again be provided by Dave Gohr of Loud Entertainment DJ Service and “Scoopie”, the mascot for Culver’s of Sturgeon Bay, will be on the beach to cheer on swimmers and hand out coupons. Ten percent of New Year’s Day Day sales at Culvers of Sturgeon Bay will be donated to the Jacksonport Firefighters Association.
