A two engine aircraft, bound for the Cherryland Airport near Sturgeon Bay made a rough landing Monday evening after the pilot suffered a medical emergency. The apparent heart attack happened as the plane neared Sturgeon Bay. The pilot’s wife was able to operate the radio and contact the airport and they were able to get another plane in the air to guide her into the airport where she made a hard landing and the nose gear collapsed leaving the plane along side the north-south runway, north of the terminal.
The Southern Door fire department was alerted and was on the scene when the aircraft went down. The Sturgeon Bay fire department provided mutual aid and the Door County sheriff’s department and Sturgeon Bay police also assisted. The woman suffered minor injuries in the landing, her husband, John Collins was pronounced dead at the hospital.
