Phone Scam in Door County

The Door County Sheriff’s Department has received several reports about a phone scam that has surfaced recently. The call originates from this number 1-202-241-1017 & the caller claims to be a representative of the Internal Revenue Service. Residents are told that they owe money to the IRS & must pay up quickly by way of a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the resident refuses to cooperate, they are threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or drivers license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile & insulting. After threatening victims with jail time or a drivers license revocation, the caller hangs up. However, other calls will be made with individuals purporting to be from the local police or DMV & caller ID backs them up. The sheriff’s department says, if you should receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, & if you know you owe taxes or think you owe taxes, call the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-829-1040. The agency’s representatives will help you find the information you need. Also call the Door County Sheriff’s Department.
