PCH Sweepstakes Phone Scam

A Sturgeon Bay resident alerted us to a recent phone scam attempt she experienced Tuesday, this scam supposedly involving the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. The caller identified himself as being with Publishers Clearing House and the delivery truck with $2.9 million and a cherry red Mercedez Benz were nearby in Green Bay and ready to deliver. The caller then told the woman she must purchase two $500 gift cards from a local dollar store and those would pay the registration fee for receiving the prizes. The caller then warned if the woman didn’t follow the instructions that they would give the prizes to someone else. After initial research through Publishers Clearing House she learned that they would never ask a prize winner for money or gift cards, and these phone scams were known to happen around the upcoming day when the company awards the sweepstakes prizes. If you receive a call such as this you are advised to call 1-800-392-4190 and report the scam to Publishers Clearing House as well as reporting it to local law enforcement.
