Opening Weekend Deer Numbers Up

The number of deer taken in Door County during the opening weekend this year were significantly above the 2011 numbers. According to figures supplied by the Department of Natural Resources, a total of 1401 deer were harvested on Saturday & Sunday, including 909 bucks & 492 antlerless deer. That compares to 640 bucks & 389 antlerless deer taken during opening weekend in 2011. Not only were there 372 more deer registered this year, but the majority of the increase, 269 deer, were bucks. Statewide, 134,772 deer were harvested & registered during the opening weekend. The nine day gun deer season ends Sunday, November 25th.
