A 29 year old man was arrested Tuesday night in Algoma after police responded to the report of a burglary in progress at the building that houses Stick to it Fitness at 417 Steele Street at 10:09PM. The suspect, Jeremy D. Patza was detained by an occupant of the building who was alerted to the burglary when the suspect broke a window with a rock to gain entry and unlock a door. When confronted, Patza fled on foot but was chased down and detained before police arrived.
The suspect was taken to a Sturgeon Bay hospital for treatment of facial injuries suffered in the struggle but was uncooperative and unruly at the hospital and was issued a citation by Sturgeon Bay Police for his behavior.
After being treated, Patza again was uncooperative and attempted to cause damage to the Algoma squad car he was being transported in, kicking the doors and windows. A struggle with an officer ensued and Patza kicked Officer Ronald Seidl in the face. Officer Seidl did not require medical attention.
Eventually Patza was booked at the Kewaunee County Jail on charges of burglary, criminal damage to property, and battery to an officer, as well as a probation hold.
The Algoma Police Department notes that Patza enjoys a presumption of innocence and that the state must prove all charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
