Little Lake Restoration Project Moving Forward

The project to restore Little Lake in Sturgeon Bay is moving forward. A local fund raising effort, headed by the Sturgeon Bay Rotary Club’s Environmental Protection Committee has completed a successful campaign, under the leadership of Dr. John Herlache. Working with the Door County Community Foundation, the effort has also been aided by a grant from the Fund for Lake Michigan and smaller grants, along with a financial commitment from the City of Sturgeon Bay.

Work will be getting underway in 2015 to construct an engineered wetland. The estimated cost is $300,000 and it will be built south of Little Lake in Sunset Park. The storm water runoff from 260 acres, which now goes right into Little Lake, will be drained into the wetland where a series of swales and biofiltration cells will remove pollutants and sediment from the water, before it reaches Little Lake. This should result in a significant reduction in total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus in the lake.
