Thirty two acres of the historic Camp Cuesta Girl Scout camp on the northwest side of Kangaroo Lake near Baileys Harbor has been purchased by the Door County Land Trust. The property adjoins land already owned by the land trust & brings the permanently protected acreage at the Kangaroo Lake nature preserve to over 700. The Kangaroo Lake nature preserve is home to springs, seeps, dense cedar swamps & rocky outcroppings that provide a haven for bald eagles, osprey, panfish & waterfowl of all sorts. Terrie Cooper, land program director for the Door County Land Trust, says the purchase meets long term goals for both organizations. The land trust is protecting a place of ecological & scenic value & the Girl Scouts are deriving a needed income. Cooper says, because the Girl Scouts will forever be able to use the property for nature exploration & education, it is a win win situation. The scout camp, with its structures & acreage surrounding them, will continue to operate as in the past. The public is invited to an open house at the newly protected property on Saturday, from 9AM to noon. the open house celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts & the recent land trust purchase.
