There was a residential fire Friday afternoon in Forestville. The fire call came in just after 1:00 pm for the building formerly known as the Schleis Meat Market on East Main Street. Southern Door Fire Chief Rich Olson reports that the garage was fully engulfed in flames and the fire had spread quickly into the attached residence by the time his department arrived. Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Brussels-Union-Gardner department as well as the departments of Algoma, Kewaunee, New Franken, Ahnapee, Casco, Sturgeon Bay, and Egg Harbor. The nearby stretch of Main Street was closed off for just over 2 hours while they extinguished the fire. Fire Chief Olson commented that he was very thankful for all the mutual aid since conditions were rather hot and humid for all the responders. There were no human injuries, but Fire Chief Olson reports that a pet cat perished in the fire, while one cat was rescued. The entire response was complete within 2 ½ hours and the structure is a total loss. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
