A single family residence off of Evergreen road in the Town of Gibraltar sustained significant damage in a fire of undetermined origin Thursday evening, but was saved through the efforts of Northern Door firefighters. Fire Chief Chris Hecht of the Gibraltar Fire department says a passerby saw flames coming out of a wall of the unoccupied house & called 911 shortly before 6PM.
Hecht says Northern Door mutual aid was called in & about 30 to 40 firemen responded. The first personnel on the scene quickly realized the fire was in the kitchen area & went to work getting the blaze under control. Just in case, fill sites were set up at the Fish Creek dock & at the Gibraltar fire station. There was fire, heat & smoke damage in the kitchen area where flames burned through the floor & smoke damage throughout the home.
No damage estimate is available, but Chief Hecht thought the house was salvageable. He said fire crews on the scene worked very well together, a factor that played a role in saving the house. There were no injuries reported. The owners, Illinois residents, are expected to be up to survey the damage soon. Firefighters returned to the station at about 10PM Thursday.
