There was a fire in downtown Algoma today, Friday. At 11:20 am, a fire call came in for a fully involved structure fire at Bearcat’s Fish House. Algoma Fire Chief Tom Ackerman says his department arrived to find heavy smoke escaping the east side of the building. His attack crews were able to get inside and knock down a majority of the fire within the first 10 minutes. Then they remained on scene to check for any possible fire extensions in the other areas of the store. His department received assistance from the fire departments of Southern Door and Kewaunee. Also on the scene were the EMS from Algoma and Kewaunee to administer rehab for the firefighters doing the interior work with all that heat and smoke. Altogether, Fire Chief Ackerman estimated they used about 3,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. He describes here the extent of the damage to the building……
Fire Chief Ackerman says his department cleared the scene by 2:15 pm, so the entire operation too just under 3 hours. The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined and is still under investigation.
