Eight units & eighteen firefighters from the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department were sent to Bay Shipbuilding Thursday morning after a fire broke out in a barge under construction in the graving dock. Fire Chief Tim Herlache says the call came in at 10:06AM & the first units on the scene found it difficult to get at the burning scaffolding materials inside the hull because of its configuration & close quarters. Herlache says special breathing apparatus was needed in order to extinguish the smoky fire. About 100 gallons of water was used in the firefighting operation. Three firemen sustained injuries, one suffered a head laceration, the others dehydration. All three were treated at the scene by Door County Paramedics. The damage to the barge was said to be minimal. No cause for the blaze has been listeda although welding & other burning was going on at the time the fire broke out. Fire crews were back at the station at 11:35AM.
