Law enforcement officers from the Sturgeon Bay Police Department & the Door County Sheriff’s office have completed a month of their 2012 seatbelt task force deployments, working with grant funding provided by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety. Door County is one of four counties in the state & the only one in northeast Wisconsin to receive the pilot grant. In May, there were five deployments over 20 hours leading to 237 traffic stops & 154 traffic citations. 64% of the citations issued(99) were for seatbelt violations, another 22 tickets were handed out to speeders & 29 individuals were cited for miscellaneous violations. A total of 127 traffic warnings were issued including 94 for speeding, 17 for miscellaneous violations & a dozen for problems with vehicle equipment. There were also two non-traffic related arrests made during the deployments with citations handed out for possession of marijuana & drug paraphernalia. The state’s seatbelt enforcement grant allows for up to 30 saturation deployments in the county through September 30th.
