Couple Remains in Critical Condition After Camper Fire

A couple from De Pere remain in “critical” condition at Saint Mary’s burn center in Milwaukee as a result burns sustained in an early morning fire Saturday in a pop-up camper located at a home in the Town of Gardner. Chief Curt Vandertie of the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department says the fire destroyed the camper & three vehicles & damaged a nearby garage. Fifty eight year old Dan & 57-year old Carla Goffard of De Pere were transported to Ministry Door County Medical Center by ambulance then flown by helicopter to the Milwaukee hospital for treatment of their burns. The couple were taking part in a family get-together at the property on Rileys Bay Road owned by their 32-year old son, Greg, of Green Bay. After his wife alerted him to a strange glow, Goffard ran to the camper & found his parents leaving the fully engulfed unit through a door. Vehicles from the Southern Door Fire Department joined BUG firefighters & fought the blaze from shortly after 1:30 to about 4AM. During the firefighting operation, a large propane tank near the flames & a small propane tank in the camper were cause for concern. The cause of the fire is still being listed as undetermined, but it’s believed to have started inside the camper. Personnel from the Door County Sheriff’s Department & emergency services also were on hand during the blaze.
