A proposal calling for the investment of just under $151,000 to pay for a natural gas line to the Door County Highway Department’s hot mix asphalt plant was okayed by the County Board Tuesday. Propane is being used to fire the hot mix plant, but the recent glut of much cheaper natural gas on the market has made the gas line project more feasible. According to estimates put together by Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, running the natural gas line to the plant could be completed at a cost of $150,762, but the Highway Department would save nearly $125,000 in the first year alone by switching over from propane to natural gas. In approving the project, the County Board also gave the go-ahead for the department to borrow the needed money from the roads 7 bridges fund & pay it back over a three year period.
