In light of the rescue of eight fishermen Saturday afternoon on the Bay of Green Bay in southern Door County, the US Coast Guard is warning that ice conditions are dangerous at this time, especially when high winds prevail. The fishermen, from Mosinee, West Bend, Chilton & Milwaukee, were discovered by coast guard personnel conducting a survey of ice conditions in the bay. Three people were plucked off the ice near Sherwood Point after high winds opened up gaps of 20 to 50 feet between the shore & their position on the ice. Others were rescued near Chaudoir’s Dock & in the Little Sturgeon area. Door County Sheriff’s Department personnel & crews from the Brussels-Union-Gardner, Southern Door, & Sturgeon Bay fire departments participated in the ice rescue operation. No injuries were reported. Besides its helicopter, the US Coast Guard provided a boat crew Saturday afternoon.
