Starting this Wednesday, the US Coast Guard Cutter “Mackinaw” will be entering the bay of Green Bay at the Rock Island Passage to conduct several days of ice trials in the northern bay of Green Bay. While here, the “Mackinaw” will perform a series of operational tests to evaluate and record the performance of their shipboard systems in the thick plate ice. The cutter will purposely not interact with shore fast ice, not enter any port, and plans to spend each night out on the ice. It will operate in the vicinity of Chambers Island remaining north and east of Green Island and west of Washington Island. Recreational users of the ice should plan their activity carefully, use caution near the ice, and remain clear of ice cutting areas. Any questions regarding the exact timing of these events can be made by calling the Vessel Traffic Service in Sault St. Marie at 906-635-3232.
