Chicken Coop Fire in Ellison Bay

Just before 7:00 am this last Friday, the Sister Bay / Liberty Grove Fire Department was dispatched for a call of a chicken coop on fire on the south end of Garret Bay Road in Ellison Bay. Assistant Fire Chief Mike Goldstone reported that 2 fire engines and 1 brush truck reported to the scene as they were unsure if the coop would be in a field or near a wooded area. Upon arrival they learned that the fire had been extinguished by the owner with a fire extinguisher and followed up with buckets of water. The interior of the coop had been heavily damaged by the fire, but luckily no hens were injured, as they were able to escape from the coop into the run which was attached to it. The area was examined with thermal imaging to make sure no hot-spots remained. The response operation took about 10 minutes as the coop owner did a thorough job of extinguishing the fire. Assistant Fire Chief Goldstone commented that there was no foul play suspected in the incident.
