Body Recovered

The Door County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that the body recovered in Lake Michigan Saturday afternoon is that of a diver who drowned more than a decade ago. At about 3:15PM Saturday afternoon, the Door County Sheriff’s department received a call from the US Coast Guard indicating that a diver had located the body in 200 feet of water about a mile east of Whitefish Point in the Town of Sevastopol. Dirk C. Kann of Guttenburg, Iowa was 52 years old when he disappeared on September 4th, 1999 during a scuba diving exercise with friends near the shipwreck “Lakeland,” a popular dive site. Kann’s body was taken to Green Bay where authorities were able to make a positive identification. Over the years, numerous attempts to recover the body have been attempted in the vicinity of the assumed resting place. The diver who recovered his body at first thought he was looking at debris near the wreck. A closer inspection revealed it was Kann covered in full diving gear.
