A “controlled burn” that got out of hand Monday morning caused a fire that destroyed a small barn on property owned by Joe Meyer and located at 3909 Park Drive, in the town of Nasewaupee. The Southern Door Fire Department was paged out shortly before 7am and all units were sent. Close to 2 dozen firemen responded to the call. Mutual aid was also requested from the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department.

The first firefighters on the scene found that the barn had already collapsed. They kept the blaze from spreading, using water and a small amount of foam. Two fill sites were set up during the firefighting station. Fire crews left the scene at about 9:35am.

According to the fire report, lumber and beams were being burned on the south side of the building when the fire spread to the barn. The 24 by 60 foot structure is considered a total loss.
