Bail Set in Homicide Case

Bail of $1,000,000 cash was set for a 35 year old Illinois man accused of double homicide in the death of a 21 year old woman & her unborn child at a southern Door County resort over the weekend. Judge D. Todd Ehlers set Brian Cooper’s next court appearance for September 5th at 8:30AM. During the bail proceeding in Door County Circuit Court Tuesday, information gathered as part of the investigation by the Door County Sheriff’s Department alleges that Cooper strangled Alisha Bromfield to death, then had sexual relations with her corpse. The Plainfield, Illinois man reportedly attempted to kill himself several times, including once with a butter knife. Eventually, he called authorities from a gas station in Sister Bay & admitted killing Bromfield. He told investigators they would find her body in a room at the Sand Bay Beach Resort Suites & Cottages in the Town of Nasewaupee. During the bail hearing, testimony indicated that Bromfield was six & a half months pregnant. The child was not Cooper’s. While no charges were filed at the bail hearing & no court complaint is available, the district attorney’s office is expected to charge Cooper with two counts of first degree intentional homicide & one count of third degree sexual assault. Initially, Cooper was not in the courtroom during the proceeding, but, at the request of public defender Eric Maciolek of Green Bay, he was brought before the judge. It was noted during the bail hearing that a court complaint will be assembled once autopsy results are available.
