An emergency call was made early Friday evening from a passerby who noticed a mobile home in flames just south of Maplewood. Just after 5:00PM, fire crews from the Southern Door Fire Department responded to the fire on Old Elm Road, just west of Highway 42, to find the home and its attached greenhouse fully engulfed. Mutual aid was called from the fire departments of Brussels-Union-Gardner, Nasewaupee, Sturgeon Bay, Algoma, Luxemburg, and Casco. The crews used approximately 15,000 gallons of water to fully extinguish the blaze. The entire structure, and some of the basement, had substantial fire damage, and a mini-excavator was used in the response due to the limited space.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but it appears to have originated in the greenhouse. There were no human occupants in the home at the time of the fire, but there were numerous pets inside. A cat was saved during the response, but unfortunately a dog, cat, ferret, and a chinchilla all perished in the fire.
Also responding to the scene were Door County E.M.S. and the Door County Sheriff’s office. All vehicles were able to clear the scene by 7:30PM, and there were no injuries to any response personnel.
