This past Saturday was the Door County Pickleball Club’s annual summer social event at Sturgeon Bay’s Sunset Park, and club President Jay Renstrom reports they had nearly 70 pickleball players attend. He says there was a brief downpour of rain, but the courts dried off quickly and they were full again by 3PM.
This is the event when the club announces the Door County Pickleball Club winner of the Steve Schmelzer Sportsmanship Award, and this year’s award went to Kristy Medford. Kristy was from South Carolina but now resides in Baileys Harbor. Medford received numerous nominations for this year’s award, many of them mentioning her kindness, thoughtfulness, and fellowship with the sport.
Club President Jay Renstrom says this sportsmanship award is truly what sets pickleball apart from other racket sports, and that you’ll always find laughter and smiles when you come to a pickleball court.
