Sturgeon Bay Gas Leak Saturday

There was some commotion on the 1000 block of Sturgeon Bay’s N. 5th Avenue Saturday afternoon. Just before 5:00 pm, a homeowner was doing some digging by hand on his property when he accidentally hit a WPS natural gas line near his house. Natural gas was actively leaking and he called 9-1-1. Sturgeon Bay Fire Chief Tim Dietman reports his department sent 2 engines and 4 personnel to the scene. Upon arrival, they blocked off that area of 5th Avenue, evacuated the 2 homes on each side of the gas leak of all occupants and pets, and made sure nearby windows were closed. They secured the scene while WPS arrived and repaired the leak with no further incident and the entire response took approximately 45 minutes. Fire Chief Dietman stressed the importance of calling Diggers Hotline here in Door County………

Fire Chief Dietman informed us that if you are using any digging equipment beyond a hand shovel, you are required to call the Diggers Hotline first, but even if you are digging with just a hand shovel he says it’s still a good idea to find out where the gas lines are just in case. The national Diggers Hotline can be reached by dialing “8-1-1”, or the Wisconsin number is toll free at 1-800-242-8511.

2 Fire Calls in Nasewaupee Sunday

There were two fire calls in the Town of Nasewaupee Sunday. First, just after 9:30 am, a call came in for a grass fire near County Road “C”, just west of Idlewild Road. Southern Door Fire Chief Rich Olson says they learned the property owner had a burn permit for a fire the day before, but it was not fully extinguished and the fire rekindled………

Fire Chief Olson reports it was a rather small grass fire and was extinguished quickly yet thoroughly. Then, shortly before 5:00 pm, a call came in for a car fire on County Road “MM”, about a half-mile north of Highway 42. A 1972 Cadillac Eldorado convertible had its muffler dragging. This most likely caused a spark which started a fire on the vehicle’s underside. Fire Chief Olson reports his department sent 6 trucks and 20 firefighters to the scene. They blocked off that section of “MM” and extinguished the fire with approximately 1,000 gallons of water. There were no injuries, but the Cadillac was a total loss, and the entire response took just under 45 minutes.

DC MABAS Strike Team Responds to Combined Locks Warehouse Fire

Friday morning began a very large warehouse fire in Combined Locks involving the burning of numerous bales of paper pulp. Occupants of that business evacuated so nobody was left inside. Due to the size of the building, its contents, and fuel load, the fire continued extensively and the decision was made to utilize the “MABAS” (mutual aid box alarm system). This brought a very large amount of preplanned resources to the scene quickly. The resopnse to this fire became a multi-day event and approximately 67 fire departments responded to aid in one way or another. Part of this response included the Door County MABAS Strike Team which consisted of 5 engines with 4 firefighters per engine from the departments of Southern Door, Brussels-Union-Gardner, Sturgeon Bay, Egg Harbor, and Sister Bay. Two fire chiefs were also sent, Sister Bay Fire Chief Chris Hecht and Gibraltar Fire Chief Andy Bertges, as well as one fire chief’s aide. Fire Chief Chris Hecht explains how this is the first time a MABAS Strike Team was requested from Door County………

That fire began shortly before 10:30 am Friday. The “MABAS” call for the Door County Strike Team went out at 7:00 pm. They arrived in Combined Locks by 9:00 pm and assisted with the response until approximately 7:30 Saturday morning when they cleared the scene. Fire Chief Hecht said it was a devastating fire, but the first call for the county’s MABAS Strike Team went well……….

During the entire response to this enormous warehouse fire, there were no injuries to any civilians or firefighters.

Large House Fire In Carlsville Sunday

There was a large house fire near Carlsville Sunday morning. Egg Harbor Fire Chief Justin MacDonald reports that the fire call came in just before 10:00AM for a grass fire on Windsong Bluff Road, just off of Reynolds Road. The grass fire quickly spread to the side of a nearby house and lit the siding on fire. The Egg Harbor Fire Department first arrived at 10:10 to see flames coming from the second story of the 2,400 square-foot 2-story home. A “MABAS” call went out to all mainland Door County fire deparments, and a 3rd level “MABAS” alarm went out for assistance from the deparments of Algoma, Kewaunee, New Franken, and Denmark. Also on scene were door county E.M.S., The sheriff’s department, and the highway department.
The home was at the end of a long narrow driveway, and the first truck up the driveway had a ladder apparatus so they could attack the fire from above. The response utilized 2 fill-sites, the first at the Carlsville station and the second at Tractor Supply Company. Fire Chief MacDonald reports they used approximately 100,000 gallons of water and 100 gallons of foam to extinguish the blaze. The fire was under control by 12:10 when they then began extensive overhaul, making sure there were no hot-spots left.
Reynolds Road was blocked off from Townline Road to W. Carlsville Road during the response. There were no injuries, but in the end the home was a total loss. The fire originated with a burn barrel. The flames spread to some dry nearby grass, and then to the house. This fire call also involved the first action call the Door County “MABAS” incident response team. The home belonged to an Illinois family who were preparing to return to Illinois when the fire broke out. Again, there were no injuries, and all units cleared the scene by 3:25 Sunday afternoon.
