A large crowd turned out for a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning at the new facility for the Wellness Center of Door County in Sturgeon Bay. The event was an opportunity to recognize the efforts of many community members who have made the upgrade possible. Jennifer Moeller, president of the organization’s board of directors, provided a chronology of events leading to the decision to expand facilities from the small house at 312 North 5th Avenue, to the two story building that currently houses the clinic.
Moeller took time to praise donors, large & small, staff & volunteers, Vicki Wilson & Shirley Senarighi, capital campaign coordinators, the city of Sturgeon Bay & Associated Bank, Director Michelle Geiger-Bronsky, & all of the friends of the Wellness Center who have made the expansion project possible.
Former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton was the guest speaker at the ceremony, & has been a strong supporter of the local clinic for several years. She said the effort to provide programming in the area of women’s health issues has shown slow growth on the state & national level, but the Door County organization has been ahead of the game in that regard…[audio:http://wdor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/N1252.mp3|titles=Lawton]

Following Lawton’s remarks, tours of the new facility were provided. When completed, the expansion is expected to increase capacity to five patient care rooms, provide a dedicated children’s area in an enlarged waiting room, a drive through window for family planning prescription refills, staff & volunteer work space, & space dedicated for victims of sexual assault.
