Veterans Scam

The Door County Sheriff’s Department has been contacted by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs about suspicious telephone calls soliciting money for a new veteran’s outpatient clinic in Green Bay. Investigators say the calls are a scam & any money given will probably end up in a crook’s pocket & not in an account for the clinic. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the government would not solicit money over the phone to build projects like the veteran’s outpatient clinic. The phone calls target the elderly or veterans who might feel it’s a good cause & would be tempted to donate money. Anyone who receives these sort of calls is urged to hang up immediately & avoid giving out any personal information or sending money. The best way to protect yourself from scam artists is to use caution & refrain from donating to people you don’t know or representatives of suspicious charities. Any questions should be directed to the Door County Sheriff’s Department at 746-2428, or the Door County Veteran’s service office at 746-2226.
