An emergency call was made Sunday) afternoon just before 3:30 for a vehicle which reportedly broke through the ice in the Town of Gardner with one occupant still inside the vehicle. Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Chief Curt Vandertie tells us about the updates they received about the white ford SUV while en route to the location, about 35 yards off the tip of Squaw Island Road…
Fire Chief Vandertie explains that the caller was not local and not familiar with how shallow that area was….
The vehicle’s occupant was ultimately able to get out of the vehicle and return to shore on his own while getting only a little wet in the process and turning down any medical attention. Responding to the scene were the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department, Door County Sheriff’s Department, the US Coast Guard, Door County EMS, and the Gardner EMR. A service was set up to remove the SUV Monday. Fire Chief Vandertie says that with warming temperatures this week, and with spring right around the corner, everyone should use caution and be smart if you continue to venture out onto the ice.
